No, its not a Butterball, its a wild 'merriam' turkey. Its not as plump or juicy as its pale, domestic cousin, but what it lacks in girth it more than makes up for in looks. Wild turkeys roost high up in trees and while they don't fly any more than they have to, preferring to run instead, they are actually very graceful fliers.
That is a beautiful turkey and the foreground brush and landscape as well. Where I live in the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge in S. Illinois I have seen large groups of turkeys. Several weeks ago I saw 12 or more eagles flying over my area in a continuous group. There are protected nesting areas for them where boats are not allowed into the lake area. mark

ReplyDeleteI would much rather see a turkey like this than in the center of a table. I'm no a big turkey fan at all, but do think wild turkeys are beautiful birds.

This pic reminds me of a Sunday when we were sightseeing in Palmer Lake. We came up on a bunch of turkeys. I just happened to have my camera. Guess it is in some of the pics that have not been developed yet. ::sigh:: You did a great job taking this pic as usual!~
