Independance Day Celebration, Ft. Carson

There is obviously a trick to photographing fireworks, and I obviously haven't quite learned the tricks of the trade.  Oh well, here is my first attempt at photographing fireworks.  These fireworks were set off at Fort Carson's Iron Horse Park on Sunday, July 3rd.  As with all military installations, Independance Day is not just a celebration for the country's past, but for its ongoing mission.  A large number of troops from Carson are currently deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of the world so the community has stepped up to help support the families of these soldiers.

In return, as a small token of appreciation, the base opens its gates to the general public for a celebration which begins early in the day and concludes with an elaborate 30 minute fireworks display.  We weren't able to attend the festivities during the day, but we parked not far from where the fireworks were being launched and enjoyed the show from the back of the trucks.

The last two photos look like most firework images.  The first ones may have been better with a several second exposure time on a tripod, actually I do not know.  I have taken a four second exposure during day light to capture more detail I thought.  I should have also used my timer so as not to shake the camera on the tripod pressing the shutter.  We are getting our first rain during the last several hours here in southern Illinois, since the beginning of the worst drought ever.  Last night my neighbors were going firework crazy.  My dog didn't like it but I did.  However with the dry conditions they could have set some of their property on fire that surrounds me, but nothing like that happened.  I shot some measley half dozen bottle rockets off from my front yard with my dog inside.
Take care and God bless,

My attempt at photographing them was quite miserable.  My digital has a slight delay and I could not get it timed just right. :(  My sister has a really good camera, but she is very sick, so guess I won't get any good photos.  Will just have to enjoy yours.  Hope it was a nice one for you and yours.

Blessings!

I don't know.... I think you did pretty well. My digital (2 years old now) is one those that has the delay. I tried taking some tonight, and I'll put them on the computer and see if I caught anything I can save using photoshop, but I'm not holding my breath <g>. All tonight did was make me want that new camera worse than ever <LOL>

Wonderful Fire Works photographs and thanks for all the Colorado point of interest.  Won't be long and we'll be back up that way.  Plan on staying around Angel Fire or Red River, New Mexico for a month or so. Happy 4th of July to you.

I think you did a nice job with the pics.  Last year...my fireworks photos were pathetic.  This year...I did a little research.  Long exposure time (2 - 6 seconds), infinity focus, f9 - f11, and a TRIPOD!  It worked!

You did good. The two burst photos are very good.
There is a lot of great info online about how to take fireworks photos with a digital camera. My first attempts were not as good as yours.
